The Sixth Pillar of Īmān
In Islamic theology, Al-Qadr (Divine Decree) is a fundamental pillar of faith that shapes a Muslim’s understanding of human will and choice, accountability, and divine wisdom. It addresses profound questions about why events occur, how human choices matter, and how Allah’s ﷻ perfect knowledge and power encompass all things.
Although the concept of predestination may initially seem complex—a profound matter beyond full human comprehension—understanding Al-Qadr brings deep spiritual clarity. It nurtures inner peace, strengthens trust in Allah ﷻ, and helps believers navigate life’s joys and hardships with balance, patience, and humility.
Understanding the Meaning of Al-Qadr
Al-Qadr is the sixth pillar of īmān, which every Muslim is required to believe in. It affirms that everything that occurs—good or bad, ease or hardship—happens by Allah’s ﷻ will and decree, and that He creates all things with wisdom while loving and commanding what is righteous.
Linguistically, the Arabic word Qadr means to measure, determine, assess, or decree. In its religious sense, it refers to Allah’s ﷻ divine determination of all matters, assigning precise measures, outcomes, and sustenance to everything in existence according to His perfect wisdom and power.
Allah ﷻ says:
Indeed, all things We created with predestination.
Allah ﷻ, being All-Knowing and All-Wise, knows everything about you—your actions, choices, and future—before creating you. While human beings possess the ability to choose and act, everything ultimately unfolds through Allah’s ﷻ will and power. Importantly, this divine foreknowledge does not negate free will; rather, it encompasses it—a concept explored further in this chapter.
The Four Components of Al-Qadr (Divine Decree)
To fully understand Al-Qadr, scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah identify four foundational components. Together, they explain how Allah’s ﷻ knowledge, will, and creation govern all existence.
1. Allah’s All-Encompassing Knowledge (Al-ʿIlm)
Allah ﷻ possesses complete and perfect knowledge of everything that has occurred, is occurring, and will occur—across all times and places. This includes every action, intention, event, and outcome, whether hidden or apparent. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and His awareness is never subject to error or limitation.
Allah ﷻ says:
With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it.
2. Allah’s Writing (Al-Kitābah) — The Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ)
Allah ﷻ has written everything that will take place from the beginning of creation until the Day of Judgment in the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ). This includes every person’s lifespan, sustenance, deeds, joys, sorrows, and all events.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Allah wrote the decrees of all creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth.
Allah ﷻ says:
Do you not know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and the earth? Indeed, all of that is in a Record. Indeed, that is easy for Allah.
3. Allah’s Will (Al-Mashīʿah)
Nothing occurs except by Allah’s ﷻ will. Whether something happens through His direct action or through human choice, it unfolds according to His decree. Nothing occurs outside His will or beyond His authority.
Allah ﷻ says:
And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses...
4. Allah as the Creator of All Things (Al-Khalq)
Allah ﷻ is the Creator and Originator of everything that exists. He brings all beings, actions, and events into existence with perfect wisdom and precise determination. Nothing exists independently of His creation, power, or knowledge.
Allah ﷻ says:
...and He created everything and determined it with precise determination.
The Impact of Believing in Al-Qadr
Together, these four components affirm that Allah ﷻ has complete authority and control over all affairs. Belief in Al-Qadr nurtures trust (tawakkul), cultivates patience during hardship, and instills humility in times of success. It reassures believers that every moment unfolds according to divine wisdom—even when that wisdom is not immediately apparent.
Free Will in Islam: Reconciling Choice and Predestination
A common question arises: “If Allah ﷻ has decreed everything, why are humans held accountable?”
Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah affirm both Allah’s ﷻ complete decree and genuine human free will. Humans truly choose their actions and are accountable for them, while Allah ﷻ eternally knew those choices and recorded them accordingly.
Allah’s ﷻ prior knowledge does not force a person to act. Rather, Allah ﷻ wrote the decree with His eternal knowledge of all things, including what each person will choose. The writing precedes the action but does not compel it.
Though this concept may be difficult to fully grasp, it is not contradictory. The limitation lies in human understanding—not in divine wisdom.
The Limits of Human Understanding
The reality of Divine Decree relates to Allah’s ﷻ perfect power and wisdom, which surpasses the capacity of the human mind. Muslims acknowledge that they will never fully comprehend the how behind Al-Qadr, but they submit to it with faith, humility, and trust.
The Essence of Trust in Allah’s Decree
A believer understands that whatever has reached them could never have missed them, and whatever missed them was never meant to reach them.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Know that if the entire creation gathered to benefit you, they could not benefit you except with what Allah has decreed for you. And if they gathered to harm you, they could not harm you except with what Allah has decreed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.
Believers place their trust in Allah ﷻ, knowing that His decree is rooted in mercy, wisdom, and justice. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah ﷻ is more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 5999)
Benefits of Believing in Al-Qadr
Belief in Divine Decree offers profound spiritual and psychological benefits:
- Inner peace and contentment
- Increased trust in Allah ﷻ (tawakkul)
- Courage in facing trials
- Humility during success
- Motivation to perform righteous deeds
- Endurance through hardship
- Reduced anxiety about the future
Allah Does Not Burden a Soul Beyond Its Capacity
Allah ﷻ does not burden any soul beyond what it can bear. Allah ﷻ says:

Belief in Al-Qadr anchors a Muslim’s heart in clarity, balance, and purpose. It teaches that life is not governed by randomness or chaos, but by divine wisdom—while still calling each person to act responsibly, make sincere choices, and strive for righteousness.
Understanding Al-Qadr helps the believer overcome despair over the past and anxiety about the future. One strives with effort, accepts outcomes with contentment, and trusts that whatever unfolds is by Allah’s ﷻ decree. Even when events are difficult to understand, faith in Divine Decree brings steadiness to the heart, and a believer trusts that Allah’s ﷻ decree is based on perfect wisdom.
