Yawm al-Qiyāmah: The Day of Standing Before Allah ﷺ
Belief in the Last Day—encompassing the end of this world, the Resurrection, the Gathering, and the Final Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyāmah)—is one of the six pillars of īmān in Islam and a foundational tenet of Islamic theology. Far from being an abstract doctrine, this belief profoundly shapes a Muslim’s worldview, conduct, and sense of purpose. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes this reality, and Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ frequently reminded people of it in authentic narrations.
This chapter presents a clear and structured understanding of the events of the Last Day. It is grounded in the Quran and authentic Sunnah, following the way of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah. It covers the major stages of the Hereafter, the accountability of humanity, and the ultimate destinations of Paradise and Hellfire.
The Importance of Belief in the Last Day
Belief in the Last Day is more than a theological point—it is an active principle that influences character, guides conduct, and grounds a believer’s sense of accountability before Allah ﷺ. Allah ﷺ created us for a purpose, and to Him is our return.
This belief deters wrongdoing and nurtures a lasting consciousness of Allah ﷺ, encourages obedience and righteous conduct in every dimension of life, provides the believer with certainty that ultimate justice will be established, and reminds us that this worldly life is fleeting and that what lies ahead is far greater.
Without belief in the Hereafter, life loses its deeper meaning, and justice remains incomplete. Many wrongdoers may escape accountability in this world, yet none will escape the judgment of Allah ﷺ.
Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?
The First Blowing of the Trumpet: The End of the World
When Allah ﷺ wills, He will command Angel Isrāfīl to blow the Trumpet. This devastating blast will cause every living being in the heavens and on the earth to fall dead, except those whom Allah ﷺ wills. Mountains will crumble, the seas will erupt, celestial bodies will be torn from their orbits, and worldly existence will come to an end.
And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills.
The Second Blowing of the Trumpet: The Resurrection
After a period known only to Allah ﷺ, the Trumpet will be blown a second time. At this, all of creation will be raised. Souls will be returned to their reassembled bodies by the power of Allah ﷺ, and every human being who ever lived will rise to stand before their Lord.
And the Trumpet will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.
The State of Humanity at the Resurrection
Humanity will rise overwhelmed with shock, fully confronted by the reality of what they were promised in this world. Each person will be preoccupied with their own fate and unable to help even their closest family members. In their bewilderment, the people will cry out:
They will say, ‘O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?’ The reply will be, ‘This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth.’
The Quran and authentic Sunnah convey the gravity of that Day in clear terms. A believer accepts what has been revealed from reliable sources about that Day without specifying or imagining details beyond what revelation affirms.
The Gathering (Al-Maḥshar)
All of creation—humanity and jinn alike—will be gathered upon a new earth unlike the earth of this world for judgment. People will be resurrected barefoot, unclothed, and stripped of worldly status, wealth, and power. Kings and servants will stand side by side, equally exposed before their Creator.
And they will be presented before your Lord in rows.
The sun will be drawn close to creation, and people will sweat according to their deeds. The wait will be long and the distress immense.
Yet among those gathered, seven categories of people will be sheltered under the shade of Allah ﷺ on a Day when there is no shade but His: the just ruler; the young person raised in the worship of Allah ﷺ; the one whose heart is attached to the mosque; two people who love one another for the sake of Allah ﷺ; a man who refuses a temptation saying “I fear Allah”; one who gives charity secretly; and one who remembers Allah ﷺ in private and weeps. (Sḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 660)
The Blessed Pond (Al-Ḥawḍ)
Among the exclusive honors granted to Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is his Pond (Al-Ḥawḍ). Its water is described as whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and more fragrant than musk. Whoever drinks from it will never thirst again. Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ will recognize his nation by the radiant marks left by wuḑūʼ on their faces and limbs.
However, Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ was shown that certain people who altered or abandoned aspects of his religion after him would be turned away from the Pond. This is a grave warning to remain firmly upon the authentic Sunnah.
The Great Intercession (Ash-Shafāʿah al-Kubrā)
As the anguish of the Gathering intensifies and the wait becomes unbearable, humanity will seek relief through intercession. They will turn, one after another, to the greatest of the prophets—Prophet Adam, Prophet Nūḥ, Prophet Ibrāhīm, Prophet Mūsā, and Prophet ʿĭsā—each of whom will humbly decline to intercede at that moment. Finally, all of humanity will come to Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, who will say, “I am for it.”
He ﷺ will prostrate before Allah ﷺ, praising Him with words that Allah ﷺ will inspire him with at that very moment. Allah ﷺ will then grant him permission to intercede, and with that, the Judgment will begin. This is the station of al-Maqām al-Maḥmūd—the Praiseworthy Station—promised to Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ in the Quran:
And from part of the night, pray with it as additional worship for you; it may be that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.
I will be the leader of mankind on the Day of Resurrection.
The Personal Reckoning (Al-Ḥisāb)
Every individual will stand before Allah ﷺ for a direct, private, and utterly thorough reckoning. No interpreter will be needed, for Allah ﷺ knows every soul more intimately than it knows itself. Every deed, every word, and every intention—major or minor—will be laid bare and examined in full.
Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ informed us that the first matter each person will be questioned about is their obligatory prayer (ṣalāh), which underlines its centrality to a Muslim’s life and standing before Allah ﷺ.
Those who attempt to deny their deeds will find their own mouths sealed. Their hands and feet will be made to speak:
That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn.
No injustice will occur on that Day. Every soul will receive precisely what it deserves.
The Book of Deeds
After the reckoning, every person will receive their Book of Deeds—a complete, unaltered record of their entire life. Those who receive their book in their right hand will rejoice, confident of a good outcome. Those who receive it in their left hand, or from behind their backs, will be overcome with grief and regret.
And the record will be placed, and you will see the criminals fearful of what is in it.
Allah ﷺ describes the joy of those given their record in the right hand:
As for him who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, ‘Here, read my record! Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account.’ So he will be in a pleasant life, in an elevated Garden, its fruit to be picked hanging near. Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth in the days past.
The Weighing of Deeds (Al-Mīzān)
The scales of absolute justice (Al-Mīzān) will then be established. Every deed—no matter how small—will be placed on them. Not a particle’s weight of good or evil will be lost or overlooked.
And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as reckoner.
Those whose good deeds outweigh their bad will attain success and salvation—not by the merit of their deeds alone, but ultimately through the mercy of Allah ﷺ.
And the weighing that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy—it is they who will be the successful. And those whose scales are light—they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses.
The Ṣirāṭ: The Bridge Over Hellfire
Every person will be made to cross the Ṣirāṭ—a bridge stretched over Hellfire. Authentic narrations describe it as finer than a hair and sharper than a sword, with hooks that seize people according to their deeds. There is no path to Paradise except over it.
And there is none of you except that he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
Believers will cross according to the light granted to them by Allah ﷺ according to their faith and righteous deeds. Some will pass like a flash of lightning, others like the wind, others at a steady walk, and some will crawl.
Give glad tidings to those who walk to the mosques in darkness of a perfect light on the Day of Resurrection.
As for the hypocrites—those who outwardly professed faith while concealing disbelief—they will find themselves in darkness on that bridge:
On the same Day the hypocrite men and women will say to those who believed, ‘Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light.’ It will be said, ‘Go back behind you and seek light.’ And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment.
The Qaṇṭarah: The Station of Final Settlement
Those who successfully cross the Ṣirāṭ will not enter Paradise immediately. They will be held at a station known as the Qaṇṭarah, where remaining injustices between believers will be settled with perfect justice. If one wronged another in this life, recompense will be made—good deeds may be transferred to the one who was wronged, or, if the wrongdoer’s good deeds are exhausted, some of the sins of the wronged person may be placed upon them accordingly.
Only after being purified of all lingering injustices will the believers be admitted into Paradise in a state of complete peace and harmony.
Hellfire (Jahannam)
The Fate of the Disbelievers
Those who rejected faith and died upon disbelief will face eternal punishment in Hellfire.
Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth, and the disbeliever will say, ‘Oh, I wish that I were dust!’
The Fate of Sinful Believers
As for those who died upon Tawhīd—affirming the Oneness of Allah ﷺ—without committing shirk or dying upon disbelief, their fate rests entirely with Allah ﷺ. He may forgive them by His mercy, or He may punish them in Hellfire as a purification for their sins. If they are punished, they will not remain therein eternally.
Paradise (Jannah)
Paradise is the eternal abode of the believers—a realm of everlasting bliss, entirely free from sickness, sorrow, pain, and death, where every desire will be fulfilled in ways that surpass all human imagination.
And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow.
Yet above all the pleasures of Paradise, the greatest honor granted to its people will be beholding Allah ﷺ. This vision will surpass every other delight.
No! Indeed, from their Lord that Day they will be veiled.
Quranic Proofs for the Reality of the Afterlife
Allah’s Power to Re-create
If Allah ﷺ brought humanity into existence from nothing in the first instance, then raising the dead is easy for His infinite power and knowledge. The Quran responds directly to those who doubt this:
And he presents for Us an example and forgets his own creation. He says, ‘Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?’ Say, ‘He will give them life Who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing.’
The Demand for Ultimate Justice
In this world, many wrongdoers escape punishment while many righteous people suffer without recompense. The existence of Judgment Day guarantees that every injustice will be rectified, every good deed rewarded, and every wrong accounted for.
Or do those who commit evils think We will make them like those who have believed and done righteous deeds—equal in their life and their death? Evil is that which they judge.
The Revival of the Dead Earth
Allah ﷺ directs our attention to the earth, which appears barren and lifeless then returns to full life with color, growth, and abundance. This observable cycle is presented in the Quran as a direct pointer to the resurrection of the dead:
And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, until, when they have carried heavy clouds, We drive them to a dead land. Then We send down water and bring forth thereby all kinds of fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.
The Names of the Last Day
The Quran uses many names and descriptions for the Last Day, each illuminating a distinct dimension of its reality and gravity. Among them:
- Yawm al-Qiyāmah — the Day of Standing
- Yawm al-Dīn — the Day of Judgment
- Yawm al-Ḥisāb — the Day of Reckoning
- Yawm al-Faṣl — the Day of Decision
- Yawm al-Taghābun — the Day of Mutual Disillusion

The Signs of the Hour
Minor Signs
Many minor signs have already appeared or are visibly increasing, among them:
- The spread of immorality, indecency, and the loss of religious knowledge
- The rise of false claimants to prophethood
- An increase in widespread turmoil and conflict
- The prevalence of usury, intoxicants, and the breakdown of family ties
- An abundance of wealth accompanied by increased spiritual heedlessness
Major Signs
Among the major signs preceding the Hour is the appearance of the Mahdī, as established in authentic narrations. Shortly before the Hour is established, Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ enumerated ten major signs that will occur in rapid succession:
- The emergence of the Dajjāl
- The descent of Prophet Jesus
- The emergence of Yaʼjūj and Maʼjūj
- The Beast of the Earth
- A great smoke enveloping the earth
- The sun rising from the west
- A major sinkhole in the East, in the West, and in the Arabian Peninsula
- A fire that will drive people toward the place of final assembly
Preparing for the Last Day
Knowledge of the Last Day is not an end in itself—it must translate into sincere and sustained action. The believer prepares through:
- Sincere repentance (tawbah) and frequent return to Allah ﷺ
- Regular self-accountability before one is held to account by Allah ﷺ
- Obedience to Allah ﷺ and steadfast adherence to the Sunnah of Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ
- Abundant righteous deeds and service to others solely for Allah’s sake
- Safeguarding the rights of others and seeking forgiveness from those one has wronged
The wise person is the one who holds himself accountable and works for what comes after death.
Conclusion
Yawm al-Qiyāmah is a certain promise from Allah ﷺ. Its reality is not meant to paralyze the believer with fear, but to awaken the conscience, refine priorities, and guide the soul toward its true purpose. Every deed—no matter how small—carries weight in the final account, and every moment of this life is an opportunity that will never return.
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow—and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
