The First Article of Faith: Pure Monotheism as the Foundation of Islam
The belief in Allah’s ﷺ absolute Oneness, known as Tawhīd, is Islam’s first and most fundamental article of faith. It is the cornerstone of a Muslim’s belief, shaping their worldview, worship, and relationship with Allah ﷺ. Without an understanding of Tawhīd, the essence of Islam remains incomplete.
In this chapter, we will explore the depth and significance of Tawhīd, its role in Islamic theology, and how it impacts Muslims’ daily lives by guiding their devotion, sincerity, and spiritual growth.
Understanding Tawhīd: The Essence of Islamic Monotheism
Įmān begins with believing in Allah ﷺ, the Glorious, from which all other facets of faith spring. As a Muslim, no deity is worthy of worship, nor deserving of worship-level love, fear, hope, reliance, and humility except Allah ﷺ alone. Nothing in existence is worthy of ultimate loyalty and sacrifice, nor worth lowering one’s head in prostration or humility, except Allah ﷺ, the Creator of all.
Allah is the proper name of the Lord, the Exalted. It is a name that belongs to Him alone and is used by Arabic speakers to refer to the One True God. Allah ﷺ is not a different God, nor a new God invented by Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ or by Muslims. Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians also use the word Allah in their religious texts.
Tawhīd comes from the Arabic verb waḥḥada, meaning “to affirm oneness” or “to make one,” derived from a root related to wāḥid (one). In Islamic theology, Tawhīd refers to affirming Allah’s ﷺ absolute Oneness in His Lordship, His exclusive right to be worshipped, and His perfect Names and Attributes.
The Three Aspects of Tawhīd in Islam
The concept of Tawhīd can be understood through three key aspects, each clarifying a different dimension of Allah’s ﷺ Oneness.
Why Tawhīd Is Important
Tawhīd forms the essence of Islamic monotheism, guiding Muslims to recognize Allah’s ﷺ absolute authority, worship Him alone, and understand His unique nature. It is the key to building strong faith, avoiding shirk, and ensuring that all acts of worship are performed sincerely for Allah ﷺ.
Tawhīd is not merely a theological idea; it shapes the heart, the tongue, and the actions. It teaches a person where to place their ultimate trust, love, hope, fear, gratitude, and obedience.
Tawhīd in the Quran
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes Tawhīd. One of the most powerful and concise expressions of this concept is found in Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ:
Say, “He is Allah, One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.”
This Sūrah clearly establishes Allah’s ﷺ absolute Oneness, His perfection, and His complete uniqueness above all creation.
Tawhīd as the Core Message of All Prophets
All Prophets sent by Allah ﷺ to humanity preached the same central message, from Prophet Adam to Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. They called their people to Tawhīd: that Allah ﷺ alone is worthy of worship.
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying, “Worship Allah and avoid false deities.”
This verse emphasizes that the call to Tawhīd was universal across all prophetic missions.
Tawhīd as the Purpose of Creation
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
In Islamic understanding, worship is not limited to ritual acts such as prayer and fasting. It encompasses all aspects of life when actions are done sincerely for Allah ﷺ and in accordance with the Sunnah. With correct intention and correct guidance, permissible acts can become acts of worship.
Modern-Day Threats to Tawhīd
In today’s fast-paced and often materialistic world, losing sight of one’s connection to Allah ﷺ can happen gradually. Certain ideologies, lifestyles, and habits can subtly weaken Tawhīd if the believer is not vigilant.
Materialism presents one such threat: when excessive focus on possessions, wealth, status, or comfort distracts a person from the remembrance of Allah ﷺ, it weakens their relationship with Him. Secularism—the idea of separating religion from daily life—may similarly weaken the practical application of Tawhīd by making it harder to live according to Islamic principles.
Excessive self-reliance and individualism can also lead a person to forget their dependence upon Allah ﷺ, causing them to place ultimate reliance upon themselves rather than upon Allah ﷺ. This contradicts proper tawakkul: trust and reliance upon Allah ﷺ.
Atheistic materialism poses a particular danger to Tawhīd because it promotes the belief that the universe exists and functions independently of Allah ﷺ. This directly contradicts Tawhīd ar-Rubūbiyyah, as Allah ﷺ alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of all things.
By being aware of these challenges and consciously striving to maintain and strengthen belief in Tawhīd, Muslims can protect themselves from threats to their faith.
How to Safeguard Tawhīd
A Muslim safeguards Tawhīd by:
- Learning the meaning of Tawhīd and shirk from the Quran and Sunnah
- Worshipping Allah ﷺ alone without intermediaries
- Purifying intentions and avoiding showing off in worship
- Depending upon Allah ﷺ while using lawful means
- Avoiding superstition, fortune-telling, amulets, and false beliefs
- Remembering Allah ﷺ often and seeking His protection
- Reflecting on Allah’s ﷺ Names, Attributes, creation, and guidance
- Returning to Allah ﷺ in repentance whenever one falls short
Protecting Tawhīd is a lifelong responsibility. It requires knowledge, sincerity, self-accountability, and constant reliance upon Allah ﷺ.
Conclusion
Tawhīd—the absolute Oneness of Allah ﷺ—is the foundation upon which all of Islam is built. It is not merely a belief to be understood intellectually, but a truth that shapes how a Muslim worships, lives, and understands the world. Through Tawhīd, a believer recognizes Allah ﷺ as the sole Creator, Sustainer, and the only One deserving of worship.
By living according to Tawhīd, a Muslim is freed from dependence on created things and from placing ultimate trust in anything besides Allah ﷺ. This belief gives life clarity, purpose, and direction, guiding the believer through obedience, sincerity, and reliance upon Allah ﷺ alone. Holding firmly to Tawhīd protects faith, strengthens the heart, and leads to success in this life and the Hereafter.
