The First Pillar of Islam

مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
“Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah ﷻ.”
The second part affirms that Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah ﷻ. This requires believing in him, obeying him, and worshipping Allah ﷻ only as he taught. Muslims believe that Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah ﷻ and the last of the prophets, meaning no prophet will come after him. Allah ﷻ says:
“Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing.”
Following Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is obedience to Allah ﷻ, and he is the perfect example of how to live according to Islam. Allah ﷻ says:
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and who remembers Allah often.”
How to Enter the Fold of Islam
A person enters Islam by sincerely declaring the Shahāda with conviction and belief:
أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدا رسول الله
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūl Allāh
“I bear witness that there is no deity truly worthy of worship except Allah ﷻ, and I bear witness that Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah ﷻ.”
By making this declaration with conviction and sincerity, one formally enters the fold of Islam.
Implications of the Shahāda
Reciting the Shahāda carries lasting implications for the believer. It directs all acts of worship—such as prayer, supplication, and charity—solely to Allah ﷻ and establishes trust and reliance upon Him (tawakkul).
