Where Islam Agrees With Evolutionary Science — and Where It Doesn't
Muslims generally have no issue affirming many forms of evolution. Microevolution — the gradual adaptation of animals to their environment over time — is not controversial in Islamic thought. A bird’s beak evolving to better access food, or an animal developing thicker skin to survive its habitat, simply displays the power and intelligence of God, the Creator of all things. One of the names of Allah is Al-Bāriʾ, “the Evolver,” the Giver of forms. Muslims also have no issue believing that animals may share a common origin, since this does not contradict the Qur’an or the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
Why Muslims Reject Human (Darwinian) Evolution
What Muslims cannot accept is the idea that human beings themselves evolved from pre-human ancestors, because this directly contradicts the Qur’an. The Qur’an explicitly states that God fashioned Adam with His own hands, as a fully formed man — not as an infant, and not through a gradual evolutionary process. God created him from a combination of clay, soil, and water, breathed life into him, taught him the names of all things, and then placed him on Earth. Adam was created without a father or mother, and from Adam and his mate came all of humanity.
Recall when your Lord said to the angels, “I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.”
O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both He spread countless men and women…
Why Science Cannot Settle This Question Either Way
The miraculous creation of Adam can be neither confirmed nor disproven by science, nor can science disprove the existence of God. Science is restricted to natural explanations — what can be observed, measured, and tested. It can describe how things work, but it was never designed to explain who created things, or why. Questions about the metaphysical or unseen realm simply fall outside what the scientific method is built to address. Science and religion, understood this way, are not in competition; they answer different kinds of questions.
And Allah has created from water every living creature. Some of them crawl on their bellies, some walk on two legs, and some walk on four. Allah creates whatever He wills. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything.
Shared DNA Doesn't Mean a Shared Ancestor
No other creation compares to the human being, who is distinguished by intellect, culture, and moral responsibility unlike any other creature. The fact that humans share some DNA with chimpanzees does not mean humans evolved from apes — humans also share a notable percentage of DNA with bananas, and no one suggests fruit is a common ancestor. Shared genetic material reflects a shared Designer working with a common toolkit, not necessarily a shared lineage.
What About Fossils of Earlier Hominids?
Muslims have no difficulty believing that other creatures existed in the past that we may know little about. Believing that Adam was the first human does not necessarily mean no upright, two-legged creatures ever existed before him — the Qur’an is simply silent on that question. If fossil evidence were found of human-like bipedal creatures with large brains and the capacity to use tools, believing in their existence would not contradict the Qur’an or Sunnah. What would contradict Islamic teaching is the specific claim that such creatures were the biological forefathers of Adam.
…And He creates that which you do not know.
Conclusion
Islam is fully compatible with the observable, testable science of adaptation and change within species. What it firmly rejects is the specific claim that the human race descended from non-human ancestors through unguided natural processes — because the Qur’an describes the direct, deliberate creation of Adam by God’s own hands. For Muslims, this is not a rejection of science; it is a recognition that some questions about our origin can only be answered through revelation, not observation.
